For eleven years, my husband went on his family’s annual vacation without me or our children.

For eleven years, I believed his relatives simply didn’t want us there.

I believed my mother-in-law thought I wasn’t good enough.

I believed my husband’s siblings preferred the family exactly as it had existed before Julian married me.

Worst of all, I believed Lily and Leo had spent most of their childhood being deliberately excluded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who simply did not care enough to make room for them.

Then one summer afternoon, while Julian was already on his way to Hilton Head, I discovered a locked cedar box hidden behind his desk.

Inside was the truth he had been keeping from both sides of the family for more than a decade.

The first summer Julian left us behind, Lily was only four years old.

She had curly brown hair, scraped knees, and an obsession with everything involving the ocean.

A month before Julian’s family vacation, he had shown her photographs of the Vance family beach house in South Carolina.

There were pictures of white balconies.

Wide porches.

Dunes covered in sea oats.

Cousins standing barefoot in the sand.

And one photograph of Julian as a teenager holding a red plastic bucket while his younger sister, Caroline, buried his legs in the sand.

Lily stared at those pictures for almost an hour.

“Daddy, can I build a castle there?”

Julian smiled.

“Maybe next time.”
